🗝️ Shh... Your Competitor’s Keywords Are Your Secret Weapon! (Part 1)

In my previous emails, I discussed finding those low-hanging fruit keywords so you spend your time updating content wisely heading into 2025. You can catch those past emails HERE!

Today, I'm spilling some tea...

You can have your competitors do the hard work for you.

The positive aspect of this industry is that we can easily take advantage of what's already out there. And your competitors are already handing it to you on a silver platter. I like to think of it as "borrowing" from their success. :)

Why This Works?

Your simply taking the guesswork out of it by targeting keywords you already know work. Yes, I’m talking about reverse-engineering their keyword strategy.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Find the Usual "Suspects"

Think about the blogs or sites that always seem to pop up when you search for topics in your niche. Those are your competitors. Write ’em down if you haven't already!

Step 2: Put on Your Spy Hat 🕵️

Grab a tool like Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Keysearch. (No, you don’t need to be an SEO wizard to use these!) Pop in your competitor’s domain, and voilà...it’ll show you all the keywords they rank for.

Step 3: Spot the Weak Links

Here’s the juicy part: Look for keywords where they’re ranking in positions 5–20. These are the ones they’re not nailing. When you find them, that's your opportunity to swoop in!

Step 4: Create Killer Content

Take those keywords and make something better:

  • Add more value than what they offer. (Not just fluff!)
  • Use a catchier headline.
  • Include great visuals that are more enticing.
  • Take a different approach.
  • Check out user comments to see what questions/topics aren't being addressed.
  • Basically, outshine them in every way you can.

This is something I talk about a lot in my courses and something I will personally be working on a lot this quarter.

I know I've mentioned it before but Clariti helps me organize ALL of this so easily! If you haven't signed up yet, it's very user-friendly and easy to track updates, take notes, organize posts, and set tasks up if you're that type of worker! :)
